Thanksgiving is rapidly approaching, and while for most the holiday is a time of year to gather with family members, stuff ourselves silly and give thanks for everything that we have; but for many it is a reminder of what they don’t have. According to the USDA about 14 percent of American households were, food insecure in 2014. This statistic hurts more around the holidays, when there are more reminders of hunger and what these people might not have. Athletes C.A.R.E. is doing something to end that hunger.
Every year Athletes C.A.R.E. holds the Cans for CARE Food Drive, which collects canned goods and nonperishable foods during the month of November, leading up to Thanksgiving. Every year we collect the food and distribute it to homeless shelters and food pantries in the area. This year Athletes C.A.R.E. is teaming up with the Lafayette LANDIS center to combine our profits and donate them to the Northwest New Jersey Community Action Partnership (NORWESCAP) and ProJeCt of Easton. By pairing up with the LANDIS center and donating to these two organizations we are effectively doubling the amount of food we collect and are gaining a farther reach in who we help.
NORWESCAP is a non-profit organization, founded in 1965, that helps serve the low-income areas of North Western New Jersey. This year NORWESCAP is celebrating 50 years of service by featuring a different program every month. This month’s program is the Career and Life Transitions Center for Women. It helps women surviving on one income. The program does this by providing supportive services and skill-building classes to help women who have recently lost their primary source of income, get back into the workforce.
ProJeCt of Easton has a mission of helping people in low-income areas by “helping people help themselves”. ProJeCt does this by supplying emergency needs and a variety of social support and educations programs. One of the social services that ProJeCt includes is a food pantry for citizens in food insecure households.
Both of these organizations are highly deserving of as much help and aid that we can provide them through our Cans for CARE Food Drive. We will be collecting canned goods; non-perishable food items and money donations up until November 24th, so look for a drop box around campus or contact us at www.Athletes.Care !
