There is nothing more exciting than helping others, a feeling that can often be forgotten by some, but most definitely not all! Brandon Williams, the Baltimore Raven’s defensive tackle, knows what it is like to be on both sides of the spectrum. Experiencing poverty first hand throughout his childhood, Williams says that he was “that kid in high school who came home after a long day at school or practice and opened the fridge and there [would] be nothing [to eat]”. Therefore, he has decided to spearhead this year’s Ravens November Food Collection.
The Raven’s goal is to collect and donate 20,000 pounds of food. Fans and people from the Maryland community were able to donate at the Raven’s game on November 1st as well as at either over 50 nearby Giant Food stores or online until November 16th! With the hopes to increase the amount of donations this year, there is a possibility for donors to win prizes when posting their experiences on social media accompanied with the hashtag #FeedTheFlock. The Ravens also turned it into a friendly competition between players and the front office staff. Sometimes a little competition is just the push people need to get more involved!
This month, Athlete’s C.A.R.E. is running a very similar, fourth annual canned food drive in which all of the items collected will be donated to the Nazareth Area Food Bank. Like the Baltimore Ravens, our program wants nothing more than to be able to donate as many cans and money as possible to help stop homelessness. There are drop boxes around campus and the drive will run until November 24th. We hope to surpass the amount of food and donations from last year’s very successful drive!
Dedicating yourself to giving to others in need is something everyone is capable of doing. Whether you are a college student, a working adult, or even a famous football player, you can take part in giving back to your community. It can be easy to forget the positive impact each of us can have, so don’t forget what you can do to help the homeless during this month of November and look for our drop boxes around our Lafayette campus!
