NEWS: Founder Alec Golini Receives National Award
Athletes C.A.R.E. Founder and President Alec Golini has been awarded the 2015 Newman Civic Fellows Award presented by Campus Compact. This national honor was handed out to 201 young leaders on Wednesday from Colleges and Universities across the country. To be nominated for the award, one must be a “promising student leader who has demonstrated an investment in their community to be a Newman Civic Fellow. The Newman Civic Fellows Award is generously sponsored by the KPMG Foundation. Through service, research, and advocacy, these Fellows are making the most of their college experiences to better understand themselves, the root causes of social issues, and effective mechanisms for creating lasting change.”
The award description goes on to mention, “As these students tackle community challenges, they provide fresh energy and perspective, inspire and mobilize others, and develop their own skills and potential.”
In order to be eligible for the award, individuals must receive a formal nomination from the President of their College or University recognizing their commitment to the standards held by the Newman Civic Fellows. In a statement provided to Campus Compact accepting the award, Golini commented, “The recognition received from this award simply speaks to the greater Athletes C.A.R.E. team that has worked so hard to create long-term change in the communities in which we live. Our athletes are passionate about the communities that have afforded them so much – it is a privilege to give back and serve those same communities by addressing hunger and homelessness, issues that are so prominent in our society today. Each day, we take a small step forward in creating long-lasting change in our communities – but it always feels just as good to receive a hug, smile, or handshake – a token of gratitude from the very hunger-stricken and homeless whom we serve.”
He went on to say, “I am overjoyed to have been nominated and received such a prestigious award. I am truly honored to be amongst the 200 award winners across the country that do such great work every day to better themselves and those around them. Receiving this award truly speaks to the people of Athletes C.A.R.E. – an organization like this isn’t built by one person, but by a group of people passionate about making a difference.”
